The Federal Government has started work on two bypasses connected to the 2nd Niger Bridge, linking Asaba-Benin and Enugu-Onitsha highways.
The project moved forward after the government released 30 percent of the needed funds to contractors handling the construction.
During an inspection of federal road projects in Rivers State, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, confirmed the development.
He stated that the bypasses, known as sections 2A and 2B, are being handled by CCECC and CJC.
Umahi expressed confidence that the completed bridge would soon be in full use, benefiting people across the country.
The minister also addressed the long-standing issue of the East-West Road in Rivers State, which has suffered severe damage due to flooding.
He assured that its reconstruction would be completed between December 2025 and March 2026.
While on a two-day inspection tour, Umahi visited several ongoing projects, including the Eleme-Onne road construction by RCC, the Bodo-Bonny road project handled by Julius Berger, and the Rivers-Bayelsa section of the East-West Road being reconstructed by SETRACO.
He also inspected the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway, particularly the Aba-Port Harcourt section, which is being worked on by CCECC.
Umahi praised the contractors for their efforts and assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to improving infrastructure, especially in the Niger Delta region.
He also spoke about the government’s focus on encouraging local contractors to take on major projects.
He said that relying only on foreign companies is not enough to handle the country’s infrastructure needs.
The minister also stressed the importance of using concrete roads to solve the problem of frequent road failures, especially along the East-West Road.
