The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved $1.07 billion to support healthcare reforms under the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) program, along with N4.8 billion for HIV treatment in Nigeria.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, announced the approval, revealing that the International Development Association (IDA), part of the World Bank, provided two concessional loans of $500 million each.
An additional $70 million grant came from other international partners.
According to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, the funds will focus on improving healthcare governance and strengthening primary healthcare services across the country.
The HOPE programme aligns with the government’s efforts to boost human capital development.
The financing will be used to recruit, train, and retain healthcare workers and teachers at the state level.
About $500 million is specifically set aside to improve the quality and reach of primary healthcare, including emergency maternal and child health services.
In addition to the HOPE program, the FEC approved N4.8 billion for purchasing 150,000 HIV treatment packs, to be distributed over the next four months.
This move aims to ensure continuous access to life-saving treatments and reduce healthcare costs for vulnerable groups.
The council also reviewed the effects of recent U.S. policy changes on Nigeria’s health programs, especially in areas like HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria funding.
A committee made up of representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Health, Defense, Environment, and the Governors’ Forum will create a plan to manage potential funding challenges and maintain program sustainability.
