Residents of the Oke Ogba community in Akure, Ondo state, are in a state of fear and confusion following a series of armed robberies in which three vehicles were stolen over the course of 24 hours.
According to SUNSHINETRUTH, the incidents, which took place on Wednesday and Thursday nights, have left locals alarmed. Vehicle owners, who had parked their cars in their usual spots, were shocked to find their vehicles missing when they checked the next morning.
Reports indicate that two Toyota Camry models, one of which was a pencil variant, were among the stolen vehicles. As of the latest update, the make of the third vehicle has not been confirmed.
It has also come to light that the two security guards employed by the community reportedly abandoned their posts on the night of the robberies.
The guards had asked the chairman of the landlord association for an increase in their monthly pay, but after their request was denied, they allegedly stopped working.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, suggested that the security guards could be involved in the thefts.
The resident said, “The guards went to the chairman and unexpectedly announced that they were quitting. The chairman informed them that they could not leave without providing notice, but they left anyway.”
The resident continued, “On Thursday night, the guards didn’t show up for work, leaving the gate of the community unsecured. The next morning, two cars were found to be missing, and a third car had been stolen the night before. This has left us all in shock.”
The matter has been reported to the Fanibi police station, and the suspects are said to be in custody.
The community has experienced an ongoing issue with robberies and burglaries. Last month, a transformer cable was stolen from the area, but no arrests have been made in that case.
Many residents are frustrated with the lack of progress and are calling on the police to address the growing crime wave. One resident expressed, “This area has become known for frequent robberies and burglaries. Despite efforts by the landlords to secure the neighborhood, we haven’t seen much improvement.”
The resident added, “Since May of last year, there have been more than nine reported incidents of theft, all of which have been filed with the Fanibi police station, yet there seems to be no action taken.”
