Ayodele Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State, has expressed deep concern about the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that the party is on the brink of collapse unless urgent efforts are made to reconcile its factions.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Fayose painted a bleak picture of the PDP, describing it as fractured and lacking strong leadership.
He attributed the current crisis to unresolved internal conflicts that have been allowed to fester over time.
“The situation in the PDP is both saddening and alarming. This isn’t a recent issue. The party has failed to take decisive steps towards reconciliation. What we see now is a struggle for personal power—everyone is fighting for their own interests,” he said.
Using vivid imagery, Fayose likened the PDP to a disjointed structure with no clear direction.
“People are focused on protecting their own interests, defending their turf. When you try to sweep with just one broom, the dust will remain,” he remarked, pointing to the party’s lack of unity.
Fayose openly acknowledged the leadership vacuum within the party’s National Working Committee, questioning the absence of clear guidance.
“Where is the unity? Who is providing direction? This kind of disarray has never been seen before,” he stated.
While refraining from assigning blame to specific individuals, Fayose stressed that the responsibility lies with the leadership of the party.
“I’m not here to cast blame, but the reality is that the National Working Committee must take responsibility for this crisis,” he said.
Touching on legal challenges and internal party structures, the former governor underscored the importance of respecting judicial decisions.
“The Supreme Court’s rulings must be followed. You cannot build something solid on an unstable foundation,” he cautioned.
Fayose also addressed the influence of Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State, urging a strategic approach to engaging with him.
“If someone says they will come to your house and shows up, you must know they mean business. Wike is a force to be reckoned with and must be handled with care,” he noted.
On the 2027 presidential election, Fayose voiced his support for retaining the presidency in the South after President Bola Tinubu’s first term.
He warned against any move to return the presidency to the North, describing it as politically risky and destabilizing.
In conclusion, Fayose called for urgent internal healing within the PDP.
“The party is in poor condition. Without a change in direction, we may not achieve the goals we once envisioned,” he said.
