Exclusive: Crisis looms in Ondo community over killing of goats

There is strong indication that violence may erupt in Ajowa-Akoko in the Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State, following the killing of goats in the agrarian community.

Starnews NG exclusively learnt that hundreds of goats were killed while the perpetrators of the act consumed the slain goats without the knowledge of the custodians of the animals.

A source who craved anonymity disclosed that the community had recently ordered that goats should be apprehended and owners should pay a fine of #10,000 before gaining access to the goats.

The source noted that the action stirred up anger and the order was shelved after the issue was brought to the attention of the government.

He also added that hundreds of goats had been killed thereafter and the killers have taken to public places to cook the goats.

The sources said, “It is very sad that our community may soon face violence. A few days ago, we were informed that there was an order to arrest goats. Strangely, goats have not caused much trouble compared to cows, which have been destroying our farmlands.

“After the arrest, people were asked to pay N10,000 to get their goats back. This became a big problem, and many people were unhappy about it.

“Not long after, we began to see dead goats all over the place. It was like a killing spree. The people behind this openly gathered in different parts of the community, cooked the goats, and ate them.

“We thought they would at least return the dead goats to their owners, but instead, they ate them without asking for the owners’ permission.

“These actions are pushing our community towards chaos. It seems that these individuals are trying to cause serious problems.

“We call on the government and security agencies to step in and stop this situation before it becomes worse.”
