Ex Zamfara Governor, Yerima Gives Update On His 14-Year-Old Wife

Ahmed Sani Yerima, the ex-governor of Zamfara State, has made a statement regarding his marriage to a 14-year-old Egyptian girl in 2010 when he was 49 years old. This controversial union had raised concerns among local human rights organizations, as it was reported that the girl was only 13 years old at the time and the marriage took place at the national mosque in Abuja.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Yerima disclosed that his Egyptian wife is now pursuing a master’s degree and emphasized that she was older than initially believed. When questioned about her age, he responded, “Around that age: 14, 15,” indicating that she might have been slightly older than 13.

In response to allegations that he paid a dowry of $100,000 for his Egyptian bride, the former governor clarified that it wasn’t strictly a dowry. He further explained that the total amount included various other expenses, such as providing a house, dowry, and clothing for his wife.

This response has generated controversy and criticism, considering the significant age difference between Yerima and his wife, as well as the ethical implications surrounding child marriage.
