Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed claims that he plans to go into exile, raising concerns over an alleged plot to arrest and detain him.
According to Afripost, El-Rufai, in a post on X on Tuesday, stated that he had received information about attempts to force him out of the country. His response followed concerns raised by a supporter, Imran Wakili, over the alleged scheme.
Currently in Egypt, the former governor reassured his supporters of his return to Nigeria before 20 February, saying, “I will spend more time in Nigeria than ever before.”
El-Rufai accused his adversaries of employing intimidation tactics against his associates but maintained that he would not be silenced. He revealed that he had put his academic and language-learning pursuits on hold, emphasising that staying quiet was no longer an option.
Reflecting on past experiences, he recalled being arrested and detained three times for criticising previous administrations. However, he insisted that political persecution would not deter him, stating that life continues regardless of arrest or detention.
“For those who lose sleep whenever I am in Nigeria, take note that I intend to return in time for the launch of President IBB’s memoirs on February 20, in sha Allah,” he wrote.
El-Rufai has recently been vocal in his criticism of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership, arguing that the party’s internal organs have not convened in the last two years, undermining internal democracy.
