The Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission has assured residents that it is fully prepared to conduct free, fair and credible local government elections across the state.
The commission’s chairman, Justice Cornelius Akintayo, said adequate measures have been put in place to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process and ensure a peaceful exercise. He made this known during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ado Ekiti, which brought together political parties, security agencies and other relevant institutions.
Akintayo said the commission is determined to deliver transparent and violence-free elections, describing local government polls as critical to democratic development at the grassroots. He urged political parties and other stakeholders to cooperate with the commission to ensure a smooth process.
He also called on registered political parties to participate actively by fielding candidates and conducting their primaries in line with the law. According to him, the commission will embark on massive sensitisation to encourage residents to register, collect their voter cards and take part in the elections.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, assured residents of adequate security before, during and after the polls, while the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security, Ebenezer Ogundana (retd), urged citizens to participate actively, noting that security agencies would work round the clock to maintain peace throughout the election period.
