Security operatives from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command’s anti-kidnapping unit have successfully neutralized eight suspected bandits in a recent operation.
During a press briefing on Monday at the command headquarters in Abuja, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, confirmed the operation, adding that six additional suspects were apprehended in the Kweri forest, situated along the Niger/FCT border near Kaduna and Gauraka.
Although some of the armed group managed to escape with gunshot wounds, Disu reported that eight bandits were killed following a fierce gun battle with the police.
The arrested suspects were identified as Abdulrahman Giwa, Baba Hassan, Mohammed Dahiru, Abubakar Bature (also known as Dare), Abubakar Kadiri (alias Dayi), and Kabiru Ibrahim. According to CP Disu, these individuals were part of a notorious kidnapping and banditry syndicate, previously led by a now-deceased figure responsible for numerous abductions in the FCT and neighboring areas of Niger and Kaduna.
“During the operation, which targeted the bandits’ strongholds in the Kweri and Gauraka forests, Mallam and eight other suspects were neutralized following an intense exchange of gunfire,” Disu stated.
He also noted that two members of the anti-kidnapping squad were injured in the encounter and are currently receiving medical treatment. Intelligence reports further revealed that the kidnapping syndicate had been holding victims at various locations in the forests of Gidan Dogo, Gauraka, and Kweri in Kaduna.
