The Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) has apprehended 18 individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping and armed robbery along the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi highway.
According to Afripost,During the operation, security operatives recovered 38 locally made firearms, pellets, and various charms from the suspects.
The Corps Commandant, retired Police Commissioner Friday Ibadin, disclosed the development on Saturday in Benin, stating that the arrests took place near Eguedion Camp, close to an Army checkpoint along the highway.
According to Ibadin, 17 of the 18 suspects are non-indigenes of Edo State. He assured residents that the state government remains committed to their safety, particularly with the farming season approaching. He also reiterated that security agencies will intensify efforts to eliminate criminal activities across the state.
“While patrolling the Benin-Auchi Road near Eguedion Camp, our operatives spotted two individuals carrying firearms. They attempted to flee upon sighting security personnel but were pursued to a hideout, where 18 suspects were arrested,” Ibadin explained.
He emphasized that security personnel would continue combing forests for criminal hideouts while engaging local communities in crime prevention efforts. He further assured residents that Edo remains a secure place to live and work.
The arrested suspects have been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Agbede for further investigation. Ibadin also called for greater collaboration between security agencies to effectively combat crime in the region.
This operation aligns with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s directive for security forces to rid the state of criminal elements, particularly in rural areas and forests, ensuring the safety of farmers and residents.
