A traditional ruler in Edo State has been abducted by gunmen, who also killed a motorcycle rider during the attack.

According to Afripost, His Royal Highness Friday Ehizojie, the Onojie of Udo-Eguare in Igueben Local Government Area, was reportedly kidnapped in a remote area between Ubiaja and Udo community. Sources say the assailants ambushed the Onojie’s motorcycle, fatally shooting the rider before seizing the monarch.

In addition to the Onojie, five others were reportedly abducted, though one managed to escape.

Moses Yama, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the incident, saying police received reports of the abduction involving multiple victims, including the monarch and a 21-year-old man.

Yama explained that the Onojie was traveling as a passenger on a motorcycle when they were ambushed by unknown attackers, resulting in the rider’s death and the abduction of the traditional ruler.

In response, Commissioner of Police Betty Otimenyin has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical units, including the Police Mobile Force, to the area. The operation, aimed at rescuing the victims and capturing the assailants, is being overseen directly by the Area Commander under the commissioner’s supervision.
