Edo: Asset Recovery Committee Attempts to Seize Vehicle Used by PDP Counsels at Tribunal

By: Bayero Ade

There was mild drama in Benin on Wednesday as the Edo State Government’s Asset Recovery Committee attempted to seize a bus conveying lawyers representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the 2024 Edo Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

The 32-seater Coaster bus, reportedly owned by the state government, had transported senior counsels to the tribunal, which is being held at the Edo High Court premises.

According to the committee, the bus is part of assets allegedly taken by officials of the previous administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Earlier in the day, committee members tried to recover the vehicle before the tribunal’s sitting began. Sources revealed that an agreement was reached allowing the lawyers to use the bus for the day, with the understanding that it would be returned after they reached their destinations.

However, after the tribunal session, the committee members sought to forcibly recover the vehicle, leading to a confrontation. The situation escalated into a physical altercation between the lawyers and the committee members.

The intervention of party stalwarts from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP eventually de-escalated the conflict.

Despite the incident, the lawyers were seen departing the court in the bus.
