A violent altercation between two communities in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State has led to the destruction of at least 26 thatched houses and 16 granaries, according to the police.
In a statement issued on Monday, the state’s police spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu, disclosed that the conflict broke out when a group from Zangon Maje stormed the Gidan Na Ruwa Fulani settlement late on Sunday night, carrying torches and shouting war chants.
“The approaching group caused panic among the residents, prompting them to flee for safety,” Mr. Shiisu said.
Following a distress call, the divisional police officer in Taura and his team swiftly responded, arriving at the scene to find several homes and storage facilities set ablaze.
An initial investigation revealed that the clash was triggered by an earlier incident in which two individuals from Zangon Maje, identified as 20-year-old Musa Hussaini and 26-year-old Shanu Sule, were attacked, and their motorcycle was stolen. In response, some members of the community mobilized for retaliation, escalating the situation into violence.
Security forces have since restored order in the area, with intensified patrols in place to prevent further confrontations.
On Monday, the Ringim area commander led a delegation to visit the affected communities, engaging with local stakeholders in efforts to foster peace.
Meanwhile, five individuals have been apprehended and are currently assisting with the investigation.
“The police command urges residents to avoid taking matters into their own hands and instead report disputes through appropriate legal channels for swift intervention,” Mr. Shiisu stated.
