The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed circulating reports alleging plans for a French military base in Nigeria’s north-east.
According to Edward Buba, director of defence media operations, such claims are entirely false and baseless.
These rumours surfaced following social media claims that French soldiers had been welcomed by Femi Oluyede, the chief of army staff, and deployed to Maiduguri.
The posts speculated that the move could pave the way for France to establish a military base in the region, purportedly to combat Boko Haram while exploiting local resources.
In response, the DHQ labeled the claims as fabrications by mischief makers.
Buba reaffirmed that there are no plans or ongoing discussions to host a French military base in Nigeria.
He urged the public to disregard the misleading reports, emphasizing the military’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and maintaining professionalism in its operations.
The DHQ reiterated its stance against such speculations, calling them unfounded attempts to mislead the public.
