Delta Police Commissioner Orders Investigation into Artiste’s Death

By Charles Maduka

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has directed a full investigation into the death of 24-year-old upcoming artiste, Paul Obukohwo.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, Obukohwo allegedly died after being held in custody by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

Edafe urged the deceased’s family to visit the police headquarters to begin the investigation process. The commissioner also assured them that any officer found guilty of wrongdoing would face justice.

The police explained that the incident happened on March 26, 2025, around 3:45 p.m. when RRS officers raided a known criminal hideout on Okpanam Road.

During the operation, they arrested a suspect, Prosper Odili, 24, who was allegedly dressed in military camouflage, while others fled.

“The deceased obstructed the police from arresting his brother and damaged the patrol vehicle in the process. He was later arrested,” the statement read.

The police further stated that while in custody, Obukohwo became sick and was taken to the Police Hospital in Asaba, where doctors diagnosed him with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Due to the severity of his condition, he was referred to Asaba Specialist Hospital and then to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, where he died while receiving treatment.

Edafe acknowledged complaints on social media and from the deceased’s brother, who alleged that Obukohwo was tortured in custody. The police have promised a thorough investigation into the matter.
