Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has criticized the ongoing detention of Nigerian artist Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, by the Nigeria Police Force.
In an interview, Adeyanju revealed that influential figures may be involved in the arrest and prolonged detention of the singer.
The artiste was initially detained in Owerri, Imo State, and later moved to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
He was re-arrested upon returning to Nigeria for a performance.
His lawyer, Stan Alieke, claimed that Darlington was arrested over accusations of jumping bail.
In October, Darlington was arrested following a petition by his colleague, Burna Boy.
Alieke explained that the singer had been granted administrative bail but missed a scheduled court appearance due to a medical emergency that required him to seek treatment abroad.
The lawyer emphasized that Darlington had no intention of fleeing and had plans to return to Abuja after performing in Owerri.
Adeyanju condemned the police’s actions, arguing that the rights of the artist were being violated by prolonged detention without a court appearance.
He stated that using law enforcement to target individuals based on personal disputes is a dangerous precedent.
He also pointed out that if Darlington had been planning to escape, he would not have returned to Nigeria.
The lawyer has since filed a motion in the Federal High Court seeking the singer’s release while awaiting formal charges.
