The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has disbanded its Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT), marking a shift towards enhanced border management and trade operations.
The decision, made in consultation with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), aims to modernize customs processes and address border challenges.
Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, also announced plans to reduce checkpoints nationwide, streamline operations, and ease movement across borders.
The service will now rely on intelligence-driven frameworks and advanced technology, including geospatial tools, to boost efficiency.
The JBPT, established in 2019 to enforce border closure policies, played a key role in combating smuggling and ensuring trade compliance.
It evolved into a collaborative effort involving Benin Republic, Niger, and Nigeria.
While the patrol team has been dissolved, customs officials reaffirm their commitment to securing borders, supporting legitimate trade, and tackling economic sabotage.
Stakeholders and agencies who partnered in the JBPT’s success were acknowledged for their contributions, as customs officials emphasize a renewed focus on strategic enforcement and trade facilitation.
