On Tuesday, Justice Shamsudeen Jafar of the Kebbi State High Court sentenced Amiru Sani, Aliyu Umar, and Bashar Dan-Inno to life imprisonment for raping an 18-year-old married deaf woman.
Prosecution Counsel Barrister Faridah Muhammad detailed that the convicts, charged with criminal conspiracy and rape, committed the crime in Wararin Zaromawa Village, Gwandu Local Government Area.
The convicts broke into the victim’s home, assaulted her while she was asleep, and raped her one after the other. They restrained her by choking her with cloth and tying her hands with rope.
Barrister Muhammad urged the court to impose the mandatory life sentence as stipulated by law for such offenses. The Kebbi State Penal Code Law, 2021, prescribes penalties for criminal conspiracy and rape under sections 259 and 60.
The prosecution presented three witnesses and six exhibits, including statements in English and Hausa, to support their case.
In contrast, Defence Counsel Barrister Ahmed Abubakar-Fingila only had the convicts testify in their defense, without providing additional evidence. He requested leniency in sentencing.
Justice Jafar ruled the defendants guilty, stating that the prosecution had established all elements of the crime through consistent testimony from the victim and the first defendant, with no counter-evidence from the defense.
