Court remands 11 over alleged robbery, unlawful possession of firearms

Eleven individuals, including Bamidele Bakare, Muriana Anuoluwapo, Sheriff Alausa, Emmanuel David, Godwin Asado, Abdullahi Taoheed, Olorunwa Ayeniran, Taoheed Alade, Abdullahi Isa, Bolaji Oseni, and Tobi Adedayo, have been remanded by the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos State.

The charges against them include membership in a secret society, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

They were arraigned before Magistrate O.Y. Adefope of the Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday.

The suspects are accused of being members of the Eiye Confraternity and causing disturbances in Itire, Surulere, and Amuwo Odofin on May 25, 2024.

During a raid by a tactical team on May 27, 2024, at their hideout in Amuwo Odofin, authorities seized a locally made single-barrelled cut-to-size gun, two live cartridges, and 14 9MM Beretta pistol ammunition allegedly used in their illegal activities.

Prosecutor Haruna Magaji stated that the offences violated Section 328, Section 2(3)(a)(b)(d)(e) of the Unlawful Society and Cultism Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2021, as well as Section 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

The defendants did not enter pleas, and Magistrate Adefope ordered their remand pending further proceedings.

The case was adjourned until September 25, 2024.
