A former governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, who is being prosecuted over alleged misappropriation of N10 billion while in office, has been granted bail.
Justice Evelyn Anyadike of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin granted the ex-governor bail in the sum of N50m which will be deposited with the registry of the court.
Anyadike stated that the sum money will be forfeited to the federal government if Ahmed fails to honour the terms of the bail.
Ahmed was also asked to provide two sureties; one of whom must show evidence of land ownership in Ilorin, deposits his international passports and must require the leave of the court to travel out of the country.
The former governor is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) over a 12-count charge bordering on money laundering.
Also joined in the suit as second defendant is a former state’s commissioner for Finance, Demola Banu, who served under Ahmed’s administration.
However, the former governor is to be remanded in the EFCC custody pending the perfection of his bail conditions.
The court, however, adjourned the matter to April 29 and 30, 2024.
