The Federal High Court has dismissed claims that the judge recently assigned to the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, has stepped down.
A report circulating on social media alleged that Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, had been given the case but withdrew, citing concerns about the legality of Kanu’s arrest. However, the court has called the claim false and misleading.
In a statement released on Tuesday by Chief Registrar Sulaiman Hassan, the court clarified that Justice Tsoho never took over the case. Instead, in his role as Chief Judge, he reassigned it from Justice Binta Nyako to a different judge. The court urged the public to ignore the misleading information and rely only on official sources for updates.
The Federal High Court also warned against the spread of false news that could undermine trust in the judiciary. It assured that due process would be followed as the case proceeds under the newly assigned judge, Justice James Omotosho.
