On Tuesday, the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan directed Ismail Adeniyi, 58, a convicted fraudster, to compensate the complainant with a sum of N1.6 million.
Chief Magistrate E.A. Idowu delivered the verdict, convicting Adeniyi of the charges of fraud brought against him.
Mr. Idowu mandated the convict to pay restitution of N1.6 million to the complainant and serve a two-week period of community service within the court precincts.
“If the convict cannot pay N1.6 million as restitution to the complainant with the community service, he must serve four years imprisonment at Agodi correctional facility, Ibadan, in lieu of restitution.
“This will serve as a deterrent to other fraudsters like him,” the chief magistrate said.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, DSP Amos Adewale, told the court that Mr Adeniyi fraudulently converted N7.2 million paid into his account number 0015591229 on December 18, 2019, at Stanbic IBTC Bank, Challenge, Ibadan.
Mr Adewale said the defendant’s account was used for onward transfer to another account belonging to Awoye Adebayo without the complainant’s consent.
He said the convict then converted the N7.2 million, which was Ibikunle Babatunde’s property, to his own use.
