According to THE PUNCH newspaper, Hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan attempted to shut down Nigeria’s mobile network as a protest against Nigeria’s stance on the coup in Niger Republic. They made several unsuccessful attempts to access a major Nigerian network provider.
In their statement on their Telegram channel, Anonymous Sudan claimed responsibility for the cyber attack, citing Nigeria’s proposed military intervention in Niger as the reason for their action. They accused Nigeria’s government of supporting a planned French “colonialistic” invasion of Niger.
Despite the attempts, the Nigerian network provider’s massive firewalls successfully thwarted the hack. The company remains committed to investing in cybersecurity and strengthening its defenses, a source said.
In response to the hacking activities, the National Information Technology Development Agency warned of the risk posed by the hacktivist group to critical information infrastructure. The agency advised financial service providers, telecommunication providers, and relevant government agencies to enhance their cybersecurity measures.
Amidst the security concerns in Niger, the British embassy announced its decision to reduce staff numbers in the country. Similarly, the United States ordered the temporary departure of non-emergency personnel and families from its embassy in Niger. Despite the evacuation, the US State Department emphasized its commitment to the people of Niger and diplomatic engagement with the country.
