Consuming alcohol, smoking cigarettes not sinful – Pastor Abel Damina

By: Bayero Ade

Pastor Abel Damina, founder of Abel Damina Ministries and Power City International, has questioned the widespread belief that Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden was caused by eating fruit from the forbidden tree.

As reported by PUNCH, speaking during a New Year’s Eve sermon, Pastor Damina stated, “Adam and Eve ate nothing. Were you there? You were not there. So how do we know whether they ate something or not? Jesus was there. Can Jesus explain to us what happened? Yes.”

Referring to Mark 7:18-21, Pastor Damina argued that it is not what a person eats or drinks that makes them sinful. “If Adam and Eve ate something, they would not be sinners. It is not what people eat that makes them sinners,” he said.

He went further to address common perceptions about smoking and drinking, asserting, “I’ve told you alcohol is not a sin. I’ve told you cigar is not a sin. If you like, put it on newspaper headlines—I said it.”

However, Pastor Damina clarified that he was not encouraging these behaviors. “Am I saying you should smoke? No. You should have the sense to know that smoking will cut short your life. Am I saying you should drink alcohol? No. You should know that alcohol could lead you to embarrassment and misfortune,” he added.

Pastor Damina emphasized that sin originates from the heart, not from physical consumption. “If Adam and Eve ate, it would have gone to their stomach, digested, and been expelled. They would be free. It is what comes out of a person—what resides in their heart—that defiles them, not what goes in,” he explained

From my own point of view, there’s no place in the bible that said we should smoke. Anything outside Christ is sin. That’s not found in Christ.
