The Catholic Diocese of Warri has announced the suspension of Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following reports of his marriage in the United States.
The suspension was detailed in a statement titled “Decree of Suspension,” dated January 16, 2025, and signed by the Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, alongside the Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo.
According to the diocese, Fr. Oghenerukevwe married Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA. Videos of the ceremony were widely shared on social media, sparking concern within the church.
The church stated that this action resulted in an automatic Latae Sententiae suspension as per Canon Law.
“Due to his actions, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension under Canon 1394 §1,” the statement explained. “As the Bishop of Warri, I formally declare his suspension from all priestly duties. He is barred from representing himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity.”
The diocese further revealed that in November 2024, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had sought to be released from his priestly obligations. However, before the process could be completed, he went ahead with the marriage, breaching the vows he had made as a Catholic priest.
The church noted that while the suspension is effective immediately, Fr. Oghenerukevwe may appeal the decision if he demonstrates a sincere intention to reconcile.
“May God guide him to reflect on his choices and lead him toward the path of reconciliation,” the statement concluded.
All consequences of the suspension are now in effect, as outlined by Canon Law.
