Catholic church vows to investigate alleged assault of female teacher

The Catholic Diocese of Awka, Anambra, has pledged to investigate the alleged assault of a female teacher by a Reverend Father at one of its schools.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Awka, Reverend Father Charles Ndubuisi, Chancellor of the Diocese, confirmed the incident and promised to thoroughly look into the matter.

The accused, Rev. Fr. Jude Muokwe, serves as the Manager of Angel Primary School in Ifitedunu, a mission school located in Dunukofia Local Government Area.

According to Ndubuisi, the alleged assault involved Mrs. Ikeorah Maureen, a 50-year-old widow who works as a teacher at the school.

The incident occurred on February 12, when Muokwe reportedly attacked Maureen over allegations of insubordination, following her invitation of other teachers to a meeting aimed at discussing a potential salary increase.

“The Diocese deeply regrets this unfortunate incident that took place on Wednesday, February 12. We uphold the integrity and respect for all individuals and cannot tolerate any form of misconduct in our schools,” Ndubuisi said.

He assured that the Diocese would thoroughly investigate the incident and assess any violations of its ethical standards, promising immediate disciplinary action if necessary.

According to sources at the school who requested anonymity, Muokwe allegedly inflicted injuries on the victim, flogging her with a cane and slapping her.

The victim and other teachers had reportedly been meeting in a classroom to discuss the possibility of requesting a salary review.

During the meeting, Muokwe is said to have entered the room and began assaulting Maureen, accusing her of being the organizer of the meeting.
