It is not news that the cost of living in Nigeria has affected everything either being sold or used in the country.
This continues to make Nigerians lament on a daily basis, calling for urgent government intervention to salvage the situation.
The consistent fall of naira to the America dollar has no doubt worsened situations in Nigeria, because the country is import dependent.
As a result of this, building Engineers and Estate developers have decried the increasing cost of building materials in the country.
According to the Current Situation of Real Estate Construction sighted by Starnews NG, the cost of sharp sand rose from #63,000 to #193,000, plaster sand jumped rapidly from #115,000 to #230,000, while granite skyrocketed from the initial price of #180,000 to #500,000.
The cost of cement which was at #4,700 per bag is now #10,500, with iron(per ton) jumping unbelievably to #1.5m from #310,000 it was initially.
Tiles which cost #3,500 a pack has risen to #6,000, and the prices of blocks range from #500 to #510 for 9 and 6 inches respectively.
Kitchen Boards Carcass which initially cost #11,000 is now sold at #36,300, with kitchen doors costing #26,000 from #11,000 it was before
The price of paving stones per Sqm is now #13,000 from #4,000, with diesel now sold at #1,500 from #240 per litre.
Taking to his Facebook page to vent his annoyance on the development, an Estate Developer, Engr. Engr Adeyeye Eniafe Adeyemi said, “This is the hell we are facing on site… If you call me and I didn’t pick up any calls… We are not finding it nice as before. Clients are frown, suppliers fighting, Engineers and contractors are in the mud, we need help more than anyone there”
Just recently, Starnews NG reports that the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, and his counterpart, Minister of Trade and Investment, Mrs Doris Uzoka-Anite had a meeting with the three major cement manufacturers – Dangote Plc, BUA Plc and Lafarge Plc, and urged them to cut down the price of cement with a threat to allow importation of the product if the manufacturers fail to beat down the price.
