The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, has admonished motorists to embrace attitudinal change and be patient to avoid crashes on highways.
Dr Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC, Ondo Sector Commander, gave the advice while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Akure.
Ibitoye spoke with NAN to commemorate the 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims with the theme “That Day”.
He attributed most highway crashes to the impatience of motorists, and said that the effects of the crashes were suffered by the loved ones and families of the victims.
The sector commander said it had become imperative for all road users to remember those who died as a result of road crash.
Ibitoye also said that the command would continue to advocate for attitudinal change of all drivers, tri-cyclists, cyclists and the public.
According to him, as the theme implies, people should reflect on what happens during crashes on the road.
“There is a day a loved one dies, or is injured, other persons wounded, there is a day some people become orphans, and there is day some bread winner is killed.
“And how it will not occur is for people to have attitudinal change, we want you to drive with patience, to have defensive techniques in day and night.
“We want you to take care of your vehicles so that it will not create problems for you on the road and not create hazard for other road users.
“There is a need for all the motorists to be patient, especially during this ember months and know that it is only the living that celebrates.
“Moreover, do not overdo things, don’t drink while driving, do not drive dangerously, and keep in mind that your passengers are going to meet their loved ones,” he said.
He, therefore, called on passengers to participate in road safety during their trips, saying they must speak up when drivers were driving dangerously.
“As passengers are participating, we don’t want them to participate to distract the driver, We want them to participate to enhance safety.
“Let the motorists, pedestrians, passengers and all road users recognise the fact that road crashes kill more passengers than drivers’,” he said.
Ibitoye, however, assured that FRSC would continue to work with stakeholders to pursue public enlightement programmes and efforcement of traffic rules and regulations to serve as deterrent to traffic offenders.
“As a command, we want to collaborate with the Nigerian Medical Association for an outreach to conduct eye test, blood pressure test and some other medical checks that are relevant to drivers across the state,” the commander said. (NAN)j
