The Bayelsa State Government has approved a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for local government workers.
This decision follows demands from labour unions and aims to address wage adjustments in line with federal directives.
Workers will receive any pending pay differences from November as part of their December salaries.
The announcement was made by Acting Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo during a meeting with stakeholders, including representatives from labour unions and local government officials, at the Government House in Yenagoa.
Labour unions were tasked with submitting their calculations for wage adjustments to align with the government’s figures.
This collaborative effort is intended to ensure accurate payments alongside December’s salary disbursements.
The state government also introduced a flat ₦10,000 increase for pensioners while reviewing federal guidelines for further adjustments.
However, the government cited financial limitations, making full adoption of federal rates unfeasible.
Explaining the decision, Ewhrudjakpo noted that Bayelsa’s resources are allocated not only for salaries but also for essential public services, such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
He urged labour unions to consider the broader needs of the state in ongoing negotiations.
Labour leaders welcomed the wage increase but called for alignment with federal standards for both salaries and pensions.
Discussions on these adjustments remain ongoing.
