Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, clarified that his absence from the New Year visit to President Bola Tinubu’s Lagos residence had no political implications.
A group of state governors visited Tinubu at his home in Ikoyi, Lagos, on January 1, 2025, to mark the New Year.
Governors from various states attended, but Mohammed, who is also the chairman of the opposition PDP Governors’ Forum, was notably missing, Punch reports.
Speculation regarding the reason for his absence had circulated, especially given recent tensions between Mohammed and the presidency over proposed tax reforms.
However, his spokesperson, Mukhtar Gidado, dismissed any political connection.
Gidado explained that the governor was mourning the passing of his 102-year-old stepmother, Hauwa Duguri, on the same day as the visit. Mohammed was reported to be in his hometown, Duguri, receiving condolences.
The governor’s media team emphasized that his absence should not be linked to his political disagreements with the government.
