Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has alleged that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, along with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is behind the crises unsettling key opposition parties—the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Labour Party (LP).
In an interview with Daily Trust, Governor Mohammed claimed that the federal government, under Tinubu’s administration, has infiltrated opposition parties to establish a one-party state. He voiced concerns that these interventions threaten the unity and independence of Nigeria’s political opposition.
Speaking on the turmoil within the PDP, Mohammed, who serves as the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, emphasized that while internal disagreements exist, the governors remain united in their commitment to moving the party forward. He pointed to the federal government’s influence as a major factor destabilizing opposition parties, adding that “bad governance” from the ruling party could eventually benefit the PDP.
He also commented on the recent conflict between Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum and the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), stating that the matter has been resolved, and he is optimistic about the party’s ability to overcome future challenges.
Governor Mohammed did not hold back in addressing Wike’s role, alleging that Wike, a former PDP governor of Rivers State, is receiving support from Tinubu and is acting in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while remaining a PDP member. “Wike cannot be a member of the PDP and serve in an APC-led administration,” Mohammed said, criticizing Wike’s dual affiliations.
Refuting Wike’s claims that he received the PDP’s endorsement before joining the APC administration, Mohammed stated, “In line with natural justice, you can only belong to one place. You can’t be part of two opposing sides at the same time.”
Governor Mohammed further added that while he harbors no personal animosity towards Wike, the former governor’s lack of loyalty to the PDP poses a challenge as the party looks ahead to 2027. He noted that some party members feel the current NWC under Ambassador Damagum is aligned with Wike, contributing to the party’s internal tensions.
