Hon. Banji Okunomo, the leading gubernatorial Aspirant of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of 2020 election in Ondo State, on Saturday, gave reasons political parties in Ondo State are always suffering defeat in Ondo State election.
In a statement made available to Starnews NG in Akure, Ondo State capital, Okunomo, appealed to those who are disturbed by the state wide clamour of the people for zoning in the opposition PDP to show understanding and agree that zoning is one of the most veritable tools that would guarantee success in the emerging political dispensation.
According to him, ”zoning has become an acceptable political norm that, ‘where a political party fails to respect this equitable principle,’ such party would suffer defeat in the hands of the electorates and Providence.”
The full statement reads:
”Without being immodest , I want to say that the the PDP has the brightest chance in winning the up coming gubernatorial election in Ondo State if the stakeholders are not arm-twisted and deceived to alter the internal zoning system of the state which has been one of the most fundamental determinants of the electoral fortunes of any political party that kowtows”
”The assertion of zoning is not only of conventions or agitations, rather, it has a constitutional backing in section 8 of the constitution of PDP as amended. Therefore, the issue of zoning is not of semantics or a weak point of agitation as being decried by those who are worried by masses’ insistence on zoning under PDP.”
”As a foundation member of the PDP, I am conversant with the fact that previous electoral successes of the party were hinged on this fundamental principle that engenders oneness amongst people with competing interests in the diverse political society. It is however regrettable to reflect that previous electoral misfortunes arose from lack of mutual respect for the age-long zoning system in the State.”
”I want to appeal to those who are disturbed by the statewide clamour of the people for zoning in the opposition PDP to show understanding and agree that zoning, is one of the most veritable tools that would guarantee success in the emerging political dispensation.
