Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has commented on the defection of his son, Abba Abubakar, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a personal decision and not a reflection of his own political stance.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Atiku said, that the decision of his son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal, noting that , “in a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect, emphasizing that he does not influence his children’s political conscience.
“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians. What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” the post read in part.
Abba Abubakar’s defection was formally announced at the National Assembly in Abuja, where he pledged to work with the APC and support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027, encouraging members of his political network to join the ruling party.
Political analysts note that Atiku’s son’s move could influence youth and grassroots perceptions ahead of the 2027 general elections, coming as the APC seeks to broaden its appeal after winning the presidency in 2023.
Despite his son’s switch, Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to opposition politics, stating that he will continue to work with like-minded patriots to “restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress.
