The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it has not received any money from the federal government, despite recent reports claiming that ₦50 billion was released to settle unpaid earned academic allowances.
The response came after the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, through a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, said the funds were meant for both academic and non-academic staff of federal universities.
The statement added that the government was focused on improving education and investing in the sector to support students and staff alike.
However, ASUU’s National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union has not seen any proof that the money has been released.
He explained that there was no official communication showing that the funds had been transferred.
According to him, the union has only heard the claims and seen reports in the media, but there has been no documentation or evidence to confirm that any money was sent to ASUU.
He also noted that ASUU negotiates on behalf of its members and does not speak for other university unions.
He questioned why other staff members were included in the announcement, stressing that each group handles its own negotiations.
The government had said the payment was part of its plan to strengthen the education sector and support university staff.
It also mentioned that the ongoing academic calendar has remained stable, pointing to what it described as good cooperation between the government and universities.
Still, ASUU insisted that until the funds are confirmed and received, the union cannot treat the matter as settled.
