2024 April Fool’s Day in Nigeria witnessed a flurry of jokes and hoaxes, taking the social media space by storm.
The first and most outrageous prank was the false news of President Tinubu resigning over his inability to tackle economic crises.
This sparked a wave of speculation and disbelief among Nigerians.
Following closely was a hoax about the federal government mandating DNA testing for newborns.
This caused widespread panic especially among those fearing exposure of paternity fraud. However, this too was debunked as false information.
Another prankster claimed that the Nigerian government had increased the minimum wage to a whopping 500,000 Naira. This is obviously false as the Federal Government is yet to announce a new minimum wage.
Shifting focus to the entertainment industry, several celebrities joined in the fun by announcing fake pregnancies and newborns.
The trend kicked off with actress Mercy Aigbe, who teased about welcoming a second son.
Following suit, media personality Kiekie joined the fun with a fake pregnancy shoot, hinting at the arrival of a second child.
Nollywood star Nkechi Blessing also got in on the action, jesting about a second son entering her life with her partner.
However, it was comedian Alibaba who stole the show with his unexpected twist.
The veteran entertainer left jaws dropping as he playfully claimed to have welcomed triplets with his 55-year-old wife, Mary.
Even the international scene wasn’t spared, with a hoax circulating about the death of the sitting President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni.
While these pranks are aimed at entertaining and amusing us, they also remind us of the importance of verifying information before jumping to conclusions, lest we fall prey to unnecessary panic amidst the jests and jokes of April 1st.
