Unity Secondary School, Ode Aye, Ondo State, once a prestigious institution of learning and a beacon of national development, now stands in a state of disrepair, a victim of years of neglect.
Previously serving as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp and a Teachers’ training college, the school has suffered from lack of maintenance and attention, putting the future of its students at risk.
Founded several decades ago, Unity Secondary School played a pivotal role in shaping the education and development of some of the nation’s most accomplished individuals. However, today, its once-impressive infrastructure lies in ruins. Broken windows, crumbling walls, and a lack of basic facilities have reduced the school to a shadow of its former self.
The classrooms, once filled with eager students, are now abandoned and dilapidated.
The school’s boarding facility, in particular, has become an eyesore. What was once a place of comfort for students is now a decrepit building, far from the standard required for the well-being of the pupils who depend on it.
The once-pristine environment has been replaced with unsightly structures that serve as a reminder of the government’s neglect.
This decline has caused great concern among residents and alumni, many of whom owe their success to the strong foundation provided by the school. The transformation of Unity Secondary School from a symbol of excellence to a relic of the past is a hard reality for those who remember its former glory.
“Unity Secondary School was once the pride of our community, but now it is a sad reminder of government neglect,” said an alumnus, who wished to remain anonymous. “For many of us, this was the place where we built the foundation for our future. It is disheartening to see it left in such a state.”
Despite its historical significance, the school has not received the attention it urgently needs from the state government. The grounds, once used for the NYSC orientation camp, have been overtaken by weeds, and the school’s infrastructure is no longer fit for purpose.
This neglect has created an uncomfortable and unsafe environment for both students and staff.
Currently, students endure difficult conditions, with inadequate access to basic facilities such as clean drinking water and functional sanitation. These deficiencies make it harder for them to concentrate on their studies and achieve academic success.
In light of these pressing issues, there is an urgent need for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to take immediate action. Governor Aiyedatiwa, known for his dedication to the development of Ondo State, cannot allow this once-proud institution to continue its decline.
The time has come for the Governor to make a tangible difference in the state’s educational sector. Unity Secondary School needs immediate intervention to restore it to its former standard, not only for the benefit of current students but also for future generations who will depend on it.
It is crucial that Governor Aiyedatiwa ensures Unity Secondary School, Ode Aye, does not fade into obscurity. Education is the foundation upon which the future of Ondo State is built, and restoring this institution will play a key role in securing that future.
The time for action is now. Unity Secondary School must be given the opportunity to reclaim its place as an educational leader in Ondo State.
