A couple has been arrested in Anambra State for allegedly sending threatening messages to residents, demanding ransom under the threat of abduction.

The couple, identified as Kingsley Okoye (36) and Chidinma Okoye (27), were apprehended on Friday by officers from the Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with a local vigilance group.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests were made after reports surfaced about threatening text messages and voice notes received by unsuspecting individuals, warning of abduction unless a ransom was paid. Acting on technology-driven intelligence, security operatives apprehended the couple in the early hours in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area.

During the arrest, the authorities recovered mobile phones and SIM cards from the suspects. Ikenga stated that the couple was involved in sending extortion threats, demanding payment in exchange for not abducting or killing their victims.

The suspects confessed to the crime, admitting to the destruction of some SIM cards they had previously used for the fraudulent activities.

The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has instructed that the case be transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping/Robbery Squad for further investigation. The couple will be charged after the investigation is completed.
