—Calls for Unity Against ‘Alleged Violation’ of Nigeria’s Constitution
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has raised the alarm over what he described as a dangerous assault on democracy following President Bola Tinubu’s suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.
Amaechi, a former governor of the state, warned that the president’s action was an unconstitutional overreach, stressing that it sets a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement issued, he rejected the move, insisting that the 1999 Constitution does not empower the president to remove a sitting governor by decree.
“A democratically elected governor cannot be removed from office by a proclamation of Mr. President. The suspension of two key democratic arms of government in Rivers State is a direct violation of our Constitution,” he stated.
Amaechi accused certain political interests of attempting to “hijack power through unconstitutional means,” warning that such interference could lead to instability in the state.
“The unfolding events in Rivers State in recent months show a deliberate plan to undermine democracy and impose certain individuals on the people. This illegality must not stand,” he declared.
Calling on state governors, legislators, and the National Assembly to reject what he termed a “drift towards totalitarianism,” he urged immediate action to restore constitutional order.
“This is an affront to democracy, and all lovers of democracy must resist it. I commend those governors who have spoken out against this illegality,” Amaechi added.
The development has continued to generate outrage, with political analysts warning that it could trigger a constitutional crisis if left unchecked.
