Akwa Ibom State is set to begin paying the new N80,000 minimum wage to eligible workers starting in January 2025.
The payment will include arrears from November 2024 for those verified by the state government.
Governor Umo Eno made the announcement during the 2025 Thanksgiving Service of the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ikot Ekpene Udo, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area.
The governor thanked the journalists for their support and professional coverage, urging those who criticize the state to stop.
He also recognized the leadership of the NUJ State Council Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, and pledged to complete the Union’s Secretariat during his tenure, Channels TV reports.
Governor Eno also discussed the progress in clearing a backlog of N97 billion in workers’ gratuities and other dues.
Emphasizing his commitment to the welfare of state workers, the governor reassured that those verified for the minimum wage will be paid from November 1, 2024, without needing any additional requests.
He stated that his administration values workers and will continue prioritizing their well-being.
