The Akwa Ibom State government has launched an investigation into the state of boarding facilities at secondary schools following the circulation of a viral video showing students at Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, being served substandard meals.
Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, the state’s Commissioner for Education, made the announcement in a statement released yesterday, revealing that the principal of the school, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, has been suspended while the investigation is ongoing.
The investigation was prompted by an unscheduled visit to the school, which raised concerns about the state of the boarding facilities, including the quality of meals served to the students.
“I have ordered a comprehensive review of the boarding facilities at Presbyterian Senior Science College and the other 25 boarding schools across the state. This will include the conditions of hostels, dining areas, kitchens, sanitation facilities, and meal quality,” Etiebet stated. The inquiry will be led by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board.
While Akwa Ibom’s free education policy only covers tuition, Etiebet assured that the welfare of students remains a key priority under Governor Umo Eno’s administration.
She also called on parents to assist their children with non-tuition-related needs, as the government remains committed to ensuring the highest standards in public education facilities.
Etiebet reassured the public that the government will uphold minimum standards for the welfare of students and staff, emphasizing Governor Umo Eno’s dedication to improving the education sector as part of his ARISE Agenda. She asked for patience as the investigation proceeds.
