Okitipupa, Ondo State – December 15, 2024 – Pastor Olusegun Aiyerin, the Honorable Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Cooperative in Ondo State, has urged market traders to exercise caution in their use of electrical appliances.
This appeal came during a solidarity visit to the Okitipupa Caring Heart Market, which recently experienced a devastating fire outbreak.
Accompanied by prominent figures including HRM Oba Michael Adetoye Obatuga, the Jegun of Idepe, and local government officials, Aiyerin visited the market to assess the damage and offer support.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out around 1 a.m. on December 12, leading to the destruction of 18 shops, with the initial flames consuming nine open shops before spreading.
It is believed that a power surge triggered the incident.
The swift actions of Oba Obatuga proved crucial in preventing further disaster. Realizing the severity of the situation, he promptly contacted the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), who quickly cut off electricity supply, averting a potential catastrophe that could have engulfed the entire market and its surroundings.
Starnews NG reports that Pastor Aiyerin expressed relief that there were no casualties in the incident and assured traders that the government is committed to restoring normalcy not only in the affected areas but throughout the entire market.
He emphasized the importance of safety and vigilance among market traders, stating, “You have put in place a responsive government, your government, and the people’s government to guarantee your wellness and support at all times.”
As the market begins to recover from this unfortunate event, the call for enhanced safety measures regarding electrical appliances remains a priority for local officials, aiming to protect traders and their businesses from future incidents.
