The Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has called on the Nigerian Police Force to restore its credibility by ceasing the alleged unlawful prosecution of human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi.
Addressing journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, described Farotimi’s arrest and subsequent prosecution as unfair and contrary to the principles of justice.
Olaitan expressed concerns over delays in granting the activist bail, suggesting that external influences might be driving the legal process. “The delay in granting bail fuels suspicion that this case is being influenced by forces beyond the law and the evidence,” he said.
He stressed that Farotimi, like any accused individual, is entitled to the presumption of innocence under the law. “The burden of proof rests on the prosecution, yet this case appears to be guided by ulterior motives,” Olaitan added.
Afenifere also criticized the circumstances surrounding Farotimi’s arrest, describing it as a “de facto abduction.” Olaitan alleged that the activist’s apprehension was not properly documented at any Lagos police station, creating confusion and distress.
“This disturbing practice of arresting individuals in one state and relocating them without proper documentation or notifying their families is unacceptable. It subjects both the detainee and their loved ones to undue emotional turmoil,” Olaitan stated.
The group called on the police to adopt lawful and transparent procedures in their operations. Afenifere emphasized the importance of recording arrests at the nearest police station and granting detainees the right to contact their families or legal representatives.
“A lawful and transparent process is the foundation of justice. Anything less undermines public trust in the police and our justice system,” Olaitan concluded.
