Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, revealed that he has now become friends with the Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, whom he assaulted in 2024.
Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency, had previously been filmed slapping and insulting Abuwatseya after the driver arrived at his Abuja home to deliver a package.
The incident sparked widespread outrage, with the lawmaker apologizing and seeking alternative dispute resolution to settle the matter.
Despite the public backlash, Ikwechegh later shared that he and Abuwatseya had put the issue behind them and even become close.
Reflecting on the past, Ikwechegh called the episode a “low moment” for him, but emphasized that it gave him the chance to build a positive relationship with Abuwatseya.
He also mentioned that both men had moved on and now maintained a friendship.
The case, which was taken to court, was dismissed due to lack of merit.
Ikwechegh also explained his actions, stating that he felt his home had been disrespected during the encounter.
He clarified that the video that circulated only showed part of the story, and he believed his reaction was a response to prior events.
