Former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has expressed concern over the escalating hardship faced by Nigerians, urging the federal government to take immediate action to address the situation.
General Abubakar made this statement during a visit from the leadership of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, led by Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi, at his hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State. The group had appealed to the former head of state to encourage President Bola Tinubu to address the growing economic challenges.
Speaking on the situation, General Abubakar remarked, “Everyone is feeling the weight of this hardship, and it seems to be spiraling out of control. People are struggling to afford basic necessities like food, transportation, and school fees, and the scarcity of funds is making life increasingly unbearable.”
He called on the federal, state, and local governments to collaborate in easing the economic strain on the populace, emphasizing that the current crisis affects all Nigerians.
“The challenges we are facing concern everyone, and this is why the three tiers of government must work together to mitigate the effects of this hardship,” he stated.
General Abubakar also noted that while he has been providing advice on potential solutions, he believes that offering palliatives is not the long-term answer to the rising costs of food and essential items across the country. He affirmed his commitment to continue advocating for sustainable solutions.
Abdulsalami said: “The answer is the need for the government to flood and saturate the communities with food.
”Let the government buy food and sell it at lesser prices, so people can buy the food items of their choice, depending on their income
“We have passed these recommendations to the government and we hope they will implement it.”
“We saw unnecessary, uncalled-for carnage, theft and criminalities in the last protest. Instead of demonstrating, some went about looting even private houses and innocent people eventually suffered for it at last.
”This should not happen again and the government should also listen to the demonstrators and act swiftly because you cannot beat a child and prevent him or her from crying,” the former head of state said.
