See Your Positions as a Call to Service, UNILAG VC Urges New Student Leaders

By Charles Maduka

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, has urged the newly elected student leaders to see their positions as a call to service and personal growth as they navigate their responsibilities amidst rising campus costs. Addressing the newly inducted Faculty Presidents and Departmental Executives for the 2024/2025 academic session during a ceremony on 5 November, she emphasised the critical role they play in bridging the gap between students and university management.

Professor Ogunsola noted that the university’s recent adjustments to utility and laboratory fees were due to escalating costs of electricity and essential services, assuring students that the institution remains committed to quality education despite financial constraints. She encouraged the new student leaders to approach their roles thoughtfully, urging them to understand issues in depth and avoid actions that might disrupt campus harmony.

“While you are in UNILAG, we hope to mould you into leaders who will bring positive change and make Nigeria better. We want student-leaders who understand issues and lead wisely. Welcome to leadership, where you must innovate and make tough decisions for the greater good,” she stated.

Professor Musa Obalola, Dean of Student Affairs, echoed her sentiments, advising the leaders to focus on service, lead with vision, and inspire others through collaboration. Professor Adelaja Odukoya, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, also encouraged the new executives to use their roles as preparation for life after university, working closely with authorities to foster a supportive campus environment.

The event also saw the student leaders express appreciation for the university’s support and commitment to student welfare. They pledged to maintain peace on campus and support UNILAG’s “Future-Ready” initiative. The ceremony concluded with Mrs. Olugbemi Adisa, Senior Assistant Registrar, administering the Oath of Office and presenting Certificates of Return to the new leaders.
