Teachers residing in government-owned quarters at Rimi College, formerly known as St. John’s College, Kaduna, have been ordered to vacate their residences within three weeks.
The notice comes amid challenging economic conditions, as Nigeria faces rising inflation and financial hardship. This eviction decision places additional strain on the affected educators, who reportedly have also experienced delays in salary payments under Governor Uba Sani’s administration.
According to a document obtained by SaharaReporters, titled “Notice to Vacate Government Quarters for Renovation” and signed by Principal Mohammad Danlami Ibrahim on August 8, 2024, the teachers are expected to vacate the premises to allow for renovations, with no alternative accommodation provided.
The notice reads in part: “I am directed to serve this letter to you as a formal notice to vacate the government quarter No:… allocated to you at Rimi College, within three weeks from the date of receipt of this letter.
“The quarter is scheduled for renovation, and your occupancy is obstructing the planned work.
“You are required to: Vacate the quarter within three weeks from receipt of this letter, remove all personal belongings, and return the keys to the school principal.”
The letter further warns that non-compliance may lead to “legal action” and potential “forfeiture of any personal property remaining on the premises” as well as “deductions from your salary or benefits.”
Sources claim that Governor Sani aims to repurpose the vacated quarters for his political allies. “Uba Sani is pushing teachers out while rarely being present in Kaduna, preferring to spend time in Abuja,” a source shared. “Since the last administration’s efforts, the roads and infrastructure have deteriorated, and the city has grown increasingly unkempt.”
Another source added, “Now, in the midst of inflation, he plans to evict teachers without compensation, allegedly to assign the properties to his political associates.”
