BREAKING: UNIMED Teaching Hospital Launches Kidney Transplant Clinic

In a significant step towards enhancing life expectancy and improving the health of those battling end-stage renal disease, the UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Laje Road, Ondo City, has commenced a Kidney Transplant Clinic.

UNIMED Teaching Hospital on Thursday, the new facility, aimed at providing hope and improved outcomes for patients, began operations on 11 October 2024.

The announcement was made by the Acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr Michael Olumide Gbala, in a statement signed by the Head of Media and Publicity, Oluwatope Akinjide, who revealed that the clinic is housed within the Kidney Care Centre of the Teaching Hospital.

According to Dr Gbala, the clinic will run every Friday at 9:00 am under the coordination of Dr Akinbodewa Akinwunmi, a Consultant Nephrologist and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine. Dr Akinbodewa, a highly trained professional, completed his fellowship in Kidney Transplantation and Immunology, sponsored by the International Society of Nephrology, at Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa.

Speaking on the purpose of the clinic, Dr Gbala said it would focus on the pre-transplant assessment of potential kidney recipients and donors, donor selection, preparation of patients for transplant, as well as intra-operative and post-operative care. He further noted that the team would also carry out regular advocacy for recipients and create mass awareness on the available options for end-stage kidney patients.

Dr Gbala added that UNIMED Teaching Hospital remains committed to delivering world-class healthcare services in a serene and humane environment, driven by a passion for excellent outcomes.
