An 18-year-old secondary school graduate, Abdul Basit Qazim, has emerged as a beacon of hope in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against fuel scarcity with the development of an electric solar-powered tricycle.
Starnews NG gathered that under the mentorship of his father, Mr Fola Qazim Oredeko, an expert in innovative design systems, Abdul Basit has channelled his passion for engineering into creating a practical solution that addresses fuel challenges, environmental concerns, and economic pressures.
Motivated by the daily struggles he witnessed growing up in Nigeria, where rising fuel costs and environmental degradation have become the norm, Abdul Basit embarked on an ambitious project to design a sustainable mode of transportation.
According to him, his father always encouraged him to use his talent for the betterment of society, a lesson that inspired the creation of his eco-friendly tricycle.
Starnews NG reports that the solar-powered tricycle is a testament to ingenuity, incorporating high-efficiency solar panels and a long-lasting lithium-ion battery with a lifespan of up to five years.
“It can reach speeds of 30 km/h and cover distances of up to 200 kilometres on a single charge. With a load capacity of 800 kilogrammes, the vehicle is suitable for carrying up to six passengers and cargo.
“The design, which emits no harmful pollutants, makes it an environmentally friendly alternative to petrol-powered vehicles,” he said.
In light of Nigeria’s economic challenges following the removal of fuel subsidies, Abdul Basit’s solar-powered tricycle offers a timely and innovative solution.
The teenager believes that solar-powered vehicles can help reduce dependency on fossil fuels, lower transportation costs, and create employment opportunities. He also notes that the introduction of such vehicles would support Nigeria’s environmental goals by reducing carbon emissions.
“This tricycle provides a sustainable alternative, cutting down reliance on expensive and environmentally damaging fossil fuels.
“With the power of solar energy, users of the tricycle can save significantly on fuel costs, easing economic pressures on households.
“Supporting the production and distribution of solar tricycles can create job opportunities within the local economy, fostering sustainable development.
“The introduction of electric vehicles aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and meeting international environmental standards,” he stated.
Addressing concerns about the cloudy weather to Starnews NG, he reassured Nigerians that the solar panel does not require strong sunlight to charge, emphasising that even a ray of light is sufficient for it to function.
He further revealed that the tricycle’s battery can operate for up to five hours when not connected to the solar panel.
Abdul Basit called on the government to support innovations like his, emphasising the need to invest in renewable energy solutions that promote sustainability. He urged policymakers to consider the potential benefits of solar-powered vehicles in alleviating the financial burden on citizens while protecting the environment.
