Bill to create new state passes second reading in House of Representatives

The House of Representatives has approved the second reading of a bill proposing the creation of a new state in Nigeria’s South-South region.

At Thursday’s plenary session, the bill, co-sponsored by Godwin Offiono from Cross River alongside three other lawmakers, successfully passed its second reading.

The proposed legislation seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to carve out Ogoja State from the existing Cross River State.

Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, called for a voice vote, and the bill was endorsed by the members present.

The bill has now been forwarded to the constitutional review committee for further deliberation, marking another step toward the potential creation of additional states in the country.
