The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into the “disturbing” treatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles at a Libyan airport.
In a statement on Monday, CAF condemned the prolonged delay faced by the Super Eagles players and coaches at the Libyan airport, labeling it “disturbing”.
The African football governing body revealed that it has been in contact with Libyan and Nigerian authorities regarding the incident.
CAF said it has referred the matter to its disciplinary board for investigation and promises to take action against those responsible for violating its statutes and regulations.
“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘’Super Eagles’’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities,” the statement reads.
“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.”
The Super Eagles players were held at the Al Abaq airport since Sunday evening upon arrival in Libya for the second leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match, following their 1-0 victory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom on Friday.
In the wake of widespread outcry, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday announced the withdrawal of the Super Eagles from the qualifying match.
As of the time of this report, the Super Eagles players are on their way back to the country.
